What to look for when choosing a sewing machine

Choosing a household sewing machine for novice seamstresses seems like an impossible task. However, it can still be solved. First you need to clarify for what purpose you are purchasing a machine: for rare use at home, sewing for sale, production of complex products and embroidery.

I’ll tell you what else you need to pay attention to when choosing a typewriter.

View

Machines are electromechanical, computer controlled, there are embroidery and sewing and embroidery models, overlocks and carpet locks.

For occasional use, an electromechanical machine with 20 working and decorative stitches is suitable, and for professional tasks, a computer model with a large number of functions. An overlocker and carpetlock will come in handy if the production of things is put on stream. For minor repairs and hemming of textiles, a conventional machine with elastic and overlock stitches is suitable. If you rarely embroider, there is no point in purchasing a sewing and embroidery model.

Power

When working with thin fabrics, a 50 W machine is suitable. If you sew from medium to heavy fabrics – denim or coat, leather or cotton – you should choose the 70-80 W model.

Number of stitches to be sewn

The number of stitches to be performed should be at least five or six, even if you buy a sewing machine for repairs, cutting curtains or kitchen towels, sewing simple products. It is good if the machine is able to carry out basic stitches: straight, elastic, zigzag, overlock, blind and overcast.

Maximum stitch length and zigzag width

In all machines, the maximum stitch length can be adjusted. Even novice seamstresses should choose a unit with a stitch length regulator of up to five millimeters. The function of adjusting the zigzag width will also be useful – the stitch with which the edges of the product are processed.

The maximum zigzag width in advanced models reaches nine millimeters, which expands the capabilities of the sewing machine.

Optional accessories

When buying, read about them also you should pay attention to whether it will be possible to expand the basic equipment of the sewing machine. Additionally, it will be possible to purchase needles for different fabrics, feet for heavy fabrics, roller hemming and sewing on frills.

An important point: if you want your machine to be able to easily adapt to different types of fabrics, then it would be nice if it had a function to adjust the pressure of the presser foot on the fabric. This will provide you with the opportunity to work with a fairly large assortment of fabrics, including “always problematic” knitwear. If you are planning a stock of an overlock, then, in principle, this item can be discarded, but if the budget allows (as a rule, machines with the function of adjusting the pressure of the foot on the fabric are more expensive than their classmates without this function), then this convenience will definitely not be superfluous!

Tip: do not look for the old model – it means proven! Of course, there is a percentage of the population, this cannot be denied, who are still shoveling through the forums and looking for 100,500 reviews on a ten-year-old sewing machine, which this year has even been taken out of production, but it’s proven! =)

Most prefer modern gadgets and appliances, for example, for the kitchen – a hob with an oven is more convenient than old bulky stoves. A small percentage of the population is chasing a telephone for their own consumption, for example, a “brick” like the Nokia 3310. Computer technology in general is changing rapidly and everyone strives to take a laptop fresher and without windows XP, but with a modern OS. It also happens in sewing machines, as in telephones, and in other equipment. Something becomes obsolete, removed from production, refined, updated and released to the market. Best advice: specialty shops: call, come and see, study, sew, in the end, everything is learned by comparison.

How to take care of your sewing machine

  1. The machine must be stored in a case.
  2. The equipment should be cleaned regularly with a dry brush – especially after handling fur, wool and knitwear.
  3. The machine needs to be lubricated every six months.
  4. It is important to monitor the condition of the bobbin – to avoid cracks and heavy wear.
  5. Need to change the needle regularly – a dull needle negatively affects the stitch quality.
