7 Movies that Indicate the Realities of Today’s Mislead Society

We always talk about reel vs real, fiction vs story, hidden vs revealed. But what happens when the reel meets reality?

If you are wondering what this is about, let me tell you that I am talking about not 1, not 2 but 7 movies that changed the perspective of the viewers toward the so-called growing society.

This article lists top movies that brought light to the darkness and speech to what was unheard of for so long. These movies speak about many socio-political issues that exist in today’s society and highlight these problems in the most incredible ways.

Read until the end if you like cinema and don’t want to miss out on these fantastic stories shaped by the most talented directors and producers.

  1. Fight Club (1999)

Fight Club, being one of the most controversial movies in American pop culture, is directed by David Fincher.

It’s about a white-collared insomniac who forms an underground fight club with Tyler, a careless soap salesman.

When the movie begins, you may find it exciting, violent, and bloody. But it’s ending has an unexpected twist that might just shake you towards the end of the movie.

This movie highlights many social issues like the nature of gender roles, the serious psychological problems among men, and a lot more.

  1. Swades (2004)

This movie stars Bollywood’s king khan, Shah Rukh Khan.  Like the name suggests, the movie celebrates the homecoming of an Indian expatriate employed with NASA, Mohan.

The story brings many crucial socio-political issues that exist in Indian society. These include casteism, social exclusion, patriarchy, poverty, and inequality.

But more importantly, it is Mohan’s quest to discover his identity and respect his cultural roots after dealing with brain drain for all these years.

Undoubtedly, Swades is a must watch especially if you go through an existential crisis as well.

  1. V for Vendetta (2005)

Directed by James McTeigue, V for Vendetta is a fictional story set in a futuristic, totalitarian Britain. Now V in the title stands for a freedom fighter who is simply known as V.

However, this hero is not all merry and flowers. In fact, our freedom fighter in the movie uses terrorist tactics to fight the oppressive society, and bring down the corrupt, authoritarian government.

Sounds super interesting right? Well, the movie is much more than this brief description. So, go on, watch now.

  1. Black Friday (2007)

Fun fact: Censor Board took 2 years to approve Black Friday’s release in India.

Well before we talk about this mind-blowing movie, you should know that this movie that created all the hustle is directed by a debutant writer turned director, Anurag Kashyap. Yes, it’s the same director who is one of a kind himself in the industry today.

Now, the movie is about the 1993 Bombay Blast. It goes back to the time when communal harmony wasn’t good in India.

The film indicates an artist’s restrictions in this free society. And that’s not it. The movie is a terrific experience on its own. A MUST-MUST WATCH for sure.

  1. Into the Wild (2007)

This movie comes under one of my favorite movies of all time. Based on a true story, Into the Wild is about a young graduate, Christopher McCandless who decides to renounce all his possessions and hitchhike across America.

One thing that I find unique about this movie is the way it touches its viewers and how real it feels.

It’s a simple story about this complicated man who dealt with trauma from his early childhood. The hiking becomes his purpose of existence and finding self as an isolated entity.

The story does not end how you expect it and that is something that makes it the most real of all things.

  1. Masaan (2015)

This film is a great piece and a journey to India’s heartland, Varanasi. The movie indicates the uncertainty of life and the meaninglessness of the worldly pleasures.

The meaning of the title Masaan is Shamshaan (the crematory). It is also the ground where the dreams of Devi and Deepak (the two lovers in the movie) are burned.

This movie is a combination of dark, sad, real, and relatable.

  1. The Trial of the  Chicago 7 (2020)

Now I am not going to say if, but when you finally watch this cherry-picked dramatization of legal proceedings that lasted just short of 150 days, you shall come back to this article and leave a comment on how this movie made you feel. For me, it was an empowering experience.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a true story based on the infamous 1969 trial of the 7 defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and more.

The movie is an embodiment of socio-political issues such as police-sanctioned violence, discrimination, and whatnot.

This movie is a perfect combination of wit, humor, and unity.
