3 Tips For Securing Your Home Against Break-Ins

One of the worst things that can happen to you when you’re in the safety of your own home is to experience a break-in. And while this is something that most people won’t actually have happen to them in their life, it’s always wise to know how you can protect yourself and your home in addition to learning how you can prevent things like this from happening in the first place.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for securing your home against break-ins.

Set Up Security Cameras

A great deterrent for would-be burglars, according to Rebecca Edwards, a contributor to SafeWise.com, is to install security cameras throughout your home and property. Just seeing a camera on the exterior of a home can make someone think twice about breaking into that space, as they don’t want their face or actions caught on camera to be used against them if and when they get caught.

Ideally, you should try to set up cameras that detect motion, have night vision, are waterproof, and have cloud storage so that you can go back and look at the footage you’ve taken of your property just in case something seems off. These features will help you feel secure and will make your home more secure as well.

Reinforce Entry Points

Most of the time, if someone is going to gain entry to your home to steal things or harm you, it will either be through a door or a window. Knowing this, you can take action to reinforce those entry points to make it much more difficult for someone to get into your home.

To do this, Emily Ferron, a contributor to Safety.com, recommends that you always choose solid doors for your exterior doors. You can also install things like a strike plate and additional locks, chains, and deadbolts on your exterior doors. If you have sliding doors and windows, you can use traditional locks and put a dowel in the track so that they can’t be opened from the outside.

Come Up With A Plan In Case Your Security Measures Aren’t Enough

While it’s good to have some additional security features throughout your home to deter criminals and help you feel safe, Meghan Wentland, a contributor to BobVila.com, it’s also a good idea to have a plan in place for what you’d do if those security measures weren’t enough.

For some people, this will involve having a handgun in the home for personal protection purposes. For others, this will mean creating a plan of where to hide or how to quickly escape if necessary. But by thinking about these things beforehand, you’ll have a better chance of safely getting through this type of experience.

If you’re concerned about keeping your home safe from break-ins, consider using the tips mentioned above to help protect your home and family.
