Trulli: The history behind these unique buildings in Puglia

Admired all over the world, the Puglian trulli were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1996. They represent one of the most extraordinary examples of popular Italian architecture. The typical construction of the trulli takes up the prehistoric model of Thòlos, a Mycenaean tomb of the fourteenth century. The peasants themselves created these typical Puglian buildings, using them as temporary homes built exclusively thanks to the stones collected in the countryside. Initially the size of the trulli was limited, but with time the rooms increased more and more.

Over the years, the trulli have undergone a recovery process but in absolute respect to their essence. In its simplicity, this unique building is of extreme beauty. Now, it is even available a trullo rental in Puglia, so everybody can experience their magical charm and atmosphere.

How are the trulli structured?

Before the construction of the typical trullo, the procedure involved the construction of a cistern, located under the house, through which it was possible to recover the rainwater. Usually, the trulli are built in a single construction or are combined with each other as a complex network of houses communicating with each other.

The interior of the trulli is usually just a single room with a fireplace, a bed, and various furnishings. The typical size ranges from a minimum of 20 square meters up to a maximum of 40 square meters. Its typical shape allows for excellent air conditioning of the rooms ensuring a pleasant temperature throughout the year, thanks also to the almost total absence of openings except for the entrance door and a high small. The floor is made of stone slabs, while the planking or a floor of boards divides the central part from the vault, where the food is stored.

The roof is probably the most characteristic and unique feature of the trulli. The structure of the roofs consists of a concentric overlap of plates placed horizontally and arranged in steps, in complete balance with each other. The roof structure ends with a stone of various shapes called the pinnacle, where we can find symbols or decorations of religious or esoteric nature. It is believed that they had a magical meaning.

A trullo rental in Puglia gives the opportunity to look closer at these particular architectural jewels. These trulli combines the comfort of the most modern houses with the tradition and uniqueness of their story. The real essence has not been distorted during the renovation works, maintaining the naturalness of the materials and the magical beauty of these peculiar houses.
