Devonna Walker was a black woman; she was murdered at 29 by her racist neighbour. She had three children and her younger daughter was just a few months old. She was living in the Cambridge Town homes on the NE (northeast) side of Cedar Rapids, USA. She was living her life peacefully. She had a family.
What exactly happened at Murder night?
On January 2, 2023, Devonna had a heated argument with her white neighbours. It all started with a white lady, later one white man came and he asked the white lady to go inside. He started the argument himself. He got really angry during the argument and started harassing her racially. He also abused her several times. He made some racial comments as well. She was really upset and sad hence she ran towards door but then man followed her and knocked her down. He brought a knife from nowhere and stabbed her twice.
She tried to go away from the door and collapsed. At the same time a dog has jumped over her. when crowd was gathered there, white woman told them dog has attacked on her and she is faking her wounds. This clearly shows that the white lady does not have any values for humanity.
Continuous Racial Harassment:
As per her family members this was not the first instance of altercation. Her neighbours used to harass her racially in multiple occasions. This murder was clearly racially motivated. She kept fighting for her human rights but at last she got murdered. This incident forces us to think where we are heading as society. Instead of encouraging black people we are harassing them for no reason. None can justify that this murder was done for self-defence. It is believed that the murder was a deliberate murder.
The viral video and the Arrest:
One of the neighbours recorded this incident in his phone and later this video went viral on social media. Few social activist groups started the protest against this incident. They demanded the arrest of culprits and strict punishment for them.
Is Police Investigation justifiable?
When Devonna was attacked, police also filed charges against a man and woman involved, whose identities have not been released by the Cedar Rapids Police Department. But authorities found and arrested the killer. The Cedar Rapids Police Department said that if there were no evidences, they might release the culprits. Later on, they got released. From then, there are no further update on the case. Cedar Rapids police did not contact Devona’s family.

After the attack, she was taken to the hospital and Lasean Boles, mother of the victim was not even contacted after that. Lasean herself had to go to the police station and got all the information about what happened to her daughter, all of which was kept in the laboratory. The police said that her daughter had a physical altercation with her neighbours, a woman and an unidentified man came into the apartment and attacked her with a knife. Her family demands justice.
The family she left behind:
Devonna left behind her three children, two boys, one 7 years old, the other 14 years old and a girl who was 2 months old. Her entire family was ruined. The poor children got upset and we can’t give any justification to them. They should not live in such a careless apartment. I pray for the all three children. Police should take a strict action.
