How to Drive an ATV Safely
The first step to driving an ATV is to turn it on. To do this, take your key and put it into the ignition, and turn it. Then, locate the start button on the ATV. Once you press the start button the engine should come alive.
Leave it running for one minute or so to keep it warm. Ready to start driving? The first step is to put the engine into a neutral position. You do this by pulling the clutch lever on the left side handle.
You should notice the vehicle start to move forward. However, there won’t be any speed because it’s not in gear. Now, it’s time to shift to higher gears. You do this using the left footrest lever while the clutch is still engaged.
Release the clutch and hit the footrest level to increase gears and speed. To downshift to lower gears and speeds, you hold the clutch and hit the foot lever again, then release.
Keep in mind that this is only relevant for manual ATVs. It does not apply to automatic ones which do the shifting for you. To brake use, the lever is found on the right-side handle.
ATV Driving Tips
It’s easy to tip over when you hit a sharp turn on an ATV. To avoid this, make sure you distribute your weight to the opposite side that you’re turning. We recommend practicing on off-roads and dirt roads.
