Founded in 1961, Lamborghini is synonymous with the word supercar. Cars that push the boundaries of mechanics, while embodying Italian style and sophistication.
But did you know that there are several facts about Lamborghini that have probably escaped your attention?
Let’s take a whistle-stop tour of 9 surprising Lamborghini facts.
1. The First Lamborghinis Were Tractors
Turns out after the Second World War, what people really needed was heavy farm machinery, not supercars. Lamborghini stepped up making tractors in 1947. They still make them to this day.
Sure, getting behind the wheel might technically be driving a Lamborghini, but we think you’ll have more fun renting a Lamborghini Urus.
2. Lamborghini Shunned Motor Racing
Most luxury car manufacturers have been all over motor racing since their inception. Not Lamborghini. Their founder, Ferrucio Lamborghini, had a bad experience in his own racing career.
That was enough to put him off for life, and only later did Lamborghini start to dabble in motor racing.
3. Many Cars Are Named After Bulls
Bullfighting bulls, that is. Not the kind that might be seen from a Lamborghini tractor.
This began in 1968 with the Islero, named after a bull famous for killing his matador. The 1971 Miura continued the theme, although this was a breed, rather than an individual bull.
This theme continues to this day, with the 2021 Lamborghini Huracán Super Troffeo EVO. This harks back to a Spanish fighting bull that fought in 1879.
4. Not Your Average Patrol Car
Like a job that involves driving a supercar? Hand your resume to the Italian police. The force uses Lamborghini vehicles as part of their fleet to deliver organs in emergencies.
In November 2020, they used a Lamborgini Huracan to transport a kidney for transplant from Rome to Padua. It covered the 300-mile journey in about 2 hours, averaging 145mph.
5. They’re Owned By VW
Ready for one of the most surprising Lamborghini facts we uncovered? This quintessentially Italian brand is actually owned by a German company. Volkswagen owns Lamborghini through its subsidiary Audi.
But while driving a Lamborghini may technically mean you’re driving a VW, don’t be fooled into thinking your Golf is suddenly a Lamborghini…
6. They Are Popular with the Rich and Famous
This must have been helped by Frank Sinatra’s famous quote. He reportedly said, “You buy a Ferrari when you want to be somebody. You buy a Lamborghini when you are somebody.’
Current celebs who own Lamborghinis include Ranveer Singh, Chris Brown, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey. Not quite in this league yet? Renting a super for a day may be the way to experience what all the hype is about.
7. Great Car, but Where’s the Engine?
Lamborghinis today are known as much for what’s under the hood as the chassis. But when they first showed their car to the public, the engine wasn’t ready.
The Lamborghini 350 GTV shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966 had nothing but fresh air under the hood. The perfectionists back at the factory weren’t quite ready to reveal their masterpiece.
8. They Make SUVs Too
With so much demand globally for SUVs, Lamborghini entered the fray back in 1986 with the Lamborghini LM002. However, this early model failed to catch on.
Their current SUV the Lamborghini Urus has been available since 2018, and guess what? It’s named after aurochs, an ancient species of bull.
9. They Offer Driving Programs
One of the most surprising facts about Lamborghini is that they don’t just sell cars. They also driving programs to experience driving a supercar in different settings around the world.
Easily the craziest is the Lamborghini Accademia – a course that includes on-snow driving. Just make sure you don’t crash…
Now You Know the Facts About Lamborghini…
Learning the facts about Lamborghini is one thing. Getting behind the wheel is a different experience altogether. Whether it’s a tractor or on Urus, one thing’s for sure – it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.
