Van life continues to trend, and not just as an Instagram hashtag. Sales of Mercedes-Benz van sales increased 22.5% in 2020.
More and more people are considering converted vans for various reasons. It has become a way to travel safely and freely. And for others, custom vans are a full-time living choice.
A study before the 2020 pandemic found 51% of people live in their camper vans part-time, and 49% live in it full-time. But whatever your goal, customizing a van is no walk in the park.
Now more than ever, there is a wealth of information out there to help. You can tailor your van to your needs.
But with so many options, where do you begin? Here are five essential considerations for custom vans.
1. Power and Connection
At a minimum, it is nice to have some lighting. But if you want to a refrigerator and charge other appliances, you will need an electrical system. Make a list of all your electrical devices to work out what power you need.
Most people will opt for a leisure battery with a split charging system. But if you plan to spend multiple days off-grid, also consider solar panels.
If you work online, it is recommended to have a good data plan for a hotspot or a portable wireless hotspot.
2. Temperature Control
It can get uncomfortable quickly in your van if you are not protected from the hot and cold.
Insulating your van will keep temperatures comfortable, and it can prevent condensation. Portable or installed roof fans help airflow. You can also install a heater, which usually runs off propane.
3. Sleeping Arrangements
Blackout curtains or window covers are a lifesaver for sleep in converted vans. An airbed can be a temporary solution, but it can easily break. So invest in a good mattress!
If you want a mattress for a sprinter van or another van type, customizable options are out there. Custom van seating is also great if you plan to have friends to stay with. Saving space is essential, so seating that converts to a bed is ideal.
4. Security and Safety
Have a hidden, ideally locked, space to put valuables when you are not in the van. There are also GPS trackers and other alarms which alert you to any break-ins.
A carbon monoxide alarm and a smoke alarm, are essential for your safety.
You also want security from bugs. Consider screens on windows and a net for the door when it is open.
5. Keeping Clean
While many use gym showers, lockdown closures have taught everyone that it is good to have a backup. If a custom van bathroom is not in the budget, consider a portable shower. A solar-heated one is a good comfort option.

Customizing a van is an exciting, challenging, and rewarding job. It can be easy to focus on added luxuries for converted vans. But do not forget the essentials!
