As summer approaches, many people are planning their well deserved vacation to relax and whut the real world out of their lives for a couple of weeks. A lot of preparation goes into the planning. Finding the right place to stay at a good price takes up a lot of the preparation.
One thing that often gets overlooked is how to prepare your house for your trip. If you want to avoid a break in then this is very important. Thieves know that people are away often in the summer and look for opportunities to break in.
In this article, we will go over just what you need to do to prepare your house for a vacation when you will be out for a while.
Get a security system
The most obvious way to secure your home while away is to install a home alarm system. You can have it as simple or as complex as you like, but the best kind to have is a smart system.
This way you can monitor your home remotely. This takes away a lot of anxiety while you are away as you can still see what is happening there. If somebody comes to your door, for example, then you will get an alert on your smartphone and be able to see what the camera sees.
You can install cameras wherever you like and have instant access to see the entire home if you choose.
Hold your mail
A signal to a would-be thief that nobody is home for a while is mail piling up in the mailbox. When they see this they know they can enter unimpeded.
Make sure to have the post office hold your mail for the time that you are away. You can do this online or in your local post office. You can do this last minute or even up to 30 days in advance to make sure that you don’t have an overflowing mailbox.
This also relates to any newspaper delivery. If you have a delivery then make sure to put that on hold as well.
Hire a housesitter
When a thief scopes out a neighborhood they look for houses that don’t show any signs of activity. If they see your house that looks dark and empty then they will target it.
Having a housesitter there is a good way to make sure that it is obvious that there is a person around and this will discourage them from targeting it. They will see a car in the driveway, lights on and even may see people entering and leaving.
If you have pets, then this is also a great way to make sure your pet is taken care of when you are away so you are killing two birds with one stone. Make sure to hire somebody you know to do this, or use a housesitter service that screens applicants to make sure that you can trust the person taking care of your house.
