One theory goes that it stretches back to ancient Rome. The story goes that warriors who’d fought well in battle would be given an extra coin alongside their usual wage. That coin would sometimes bare a special mark of their legion, which led some soldiers to keep (instead of spend) it.
Another origin story pertains to an American fighter pilot in World War 1. His officer gifted him and the other pilots in the squadron a medallion with the squadron insignia on it. Shot down and captured by the enemy, he went on to use that medallion as proof he wasn’t a spy (thereby saving his life).
How Are They Used Today?
Both the role and appearance of challenge coins have chopped and changed with time. As we said, they’re still used in some circles (especially the military, police force, and fire department) to recognize service, reward bravery, and symbolize brotherhood. But they’re now also minted and handed out by politicians, businesses, teams, and so on to mark special events, show appreciation, or for pure PR!
Both old and new challenge coins are also collected and traded by military personnel and everyday civilians. In other words, they’ve been embraced as a unique modern-day hobby with historic traditions.
