A Beginner’s Buying Guide: What to Look for in New Bath Towels

Showers do more than keep you clean. The warm water actually helps you relieve stress.

But that shower can get a lot more miserable if you realize too late you don’t have a towel to dry off. If you’ve ever found yourself drip drying in a cold bathroom, it’s time to get some new towels.

We’ve put together this buying guide for beginner towel shoppers, so keep reading below to learn everything you need to know before spending your money!

Material

The softest towels are made of 100% cotton. This type of material is also the most absorbent, so you should stay away from things like polyester.

And don’t worry about spending extra money on Egyptian or Supima cotton. Although these are higher quality than normal cotton towels, they are also more expensive. Unless you have a lot of extra money to spend on your bath towels, more affordable cotton towels, such as terry cloth, will feel similar and perform the same.

Size

Standard bath towels are about 27″ x 52″. If you want to wrap your towel around you when you get out of the bath or shower, you might want something that gives you more coverage.

In this case, you should look for towels that are about 35” x 60” in size. These are commonly called bath sheets because of their larger size, and you may not be able to find them in your local department store.

Weight

When you’re shopping for new towels, weight might be the last thing on your mind, but it’s not something you should overlook.

Keep an eye out for the letters GSM. This stands for grams per square meter, and the higher the GSM, the denser the towel. Dense towels are more absorbent than thin towels, and they will also feel fluffier and softer.

Color

Does your bathroom have a particular color theme? If so, you should make sure you buy towels that match this design. Hanging a bright prink towel in a blue bathroom might look odd or become an attention-getter (for all the wrong reasons).

Plan out your color in advance so you don’t risk buying the wrong colors or shades while you’re in the store.

Price

The last thing you want to do is go into debt over bath towels. You don’t need to buy the most expensive brands or materials out there to get quality towels (remember, basic cotton is one of the best choices).

Come up with a budget before you start shopping. This will prevent you from overspending without realizing it.

If you have a tight budget, start by buying one or two towel sets at a time. After you wait a month or two, you can buy the third and fourth then the fifth and sixth. Over time, you’ll be able to replace all your old towels without putting too much stress on your bank account.
