In the United States, many people are never educated about religions aside from Christianity. Non-dominant religions often fall into the shadows and are forgotten by anyone who doesn’t practice them.
Judaism is one such religion. Despite there being about 5.8 million Jewish adults in the United States, many gentiles (non-Jewish people) have no idea what Judaism is about.
We’re here to offer a brief rundown of several of the principal beliefs of Judaism so you can stay informed. Read on to learn more.
There Is One All-Powerful God
Many of the beliefs of Judaism break down into the belief that there is only one true “God.” The names for this God vary. Some Jewish people prefer to refer to them as “G-d” while others use Yahweh or Jehova. The name does not matter as much as the meaning behind it (learn more about Jehovah here).
Jewish people believe that the one true God knows everything within the hearts of men. God doesn’t have a body but is instead present in everything. God creates and controls all things.
It’s inappropriate to worship any other beings aside from the one true God.
The Prophecy of Moses Is True
Jewish people also believe that the story of Moses is true without a doubt. Moses led Israelites across the red sea out of Egypt. He received (and revealed) the ten commandments.
In other words, Moses became a prophet and spoke for God.
God Rewards and Punishes
People of the Jewish faith believe that they can be rewarded or punished for their behavior.
While the Christian concepts of “heaven and hell” aren’t as prevalent in the Jewish faith, there is a belief in “the world to come.” This is somewhat of an afterlife.
Your actions determine your place in this afterlife.
The Messiah Will Return
Jewish people believe in the return of the Messiah, though it’s unclear as to when that return will happen. The Messiah will not return on the Sabbath and he may return on Passover.
People suspect that the coming of the Messiah will happen when the world needs him most. There will be mass civil unrest and bad behavior.
When the Messiah returns, it will bring the Messianic age.
The Dead Will Rise if God Wills It
Ressurection is one of the core beliefs of Judaism. Many Jewish people believe that during the Messianic age, the dead will rise and reunite with their souls.
This will happen in Israel, though it’s unclear as to whether or not the bodies must be buried in Israel for them to return. It’s also unclear as to whether or not non-Jewish people will also return.
