Hand Veins Bulging: Is It Normal?

Bulging, blue-violet-colored veins on your arms and hands may not be a great sight to you. In most cases, the visibility of these veins does not mean anything and is entirely harmless.

Primarily, people seek to remove these veins because they do not like their appearance. Many people opt for cosmetic vein treatment in Lake Mary and get them removed.

What causes your hand veins to bulge?

There can be many reasons why your hand veins bulge so much. Often it is not a threatening medical condition and is purely superficial.

  1. You work out a lot.

When you work out, your blood pressure level rises, which causes your veins to push into the skin. This is what makes your veins bulge out. Typically, this only happens while you’re exercising, and it returns to normal after you finish working out.

However, when a person works out a lot, the bulging of the veins tends to stay that way and become permanent on their skin. If you are a heavy-weight lifter, you are likely to have them.

  1. You are underweight.

When you have low body fat, these veins start to become visible on your hands. Body fats hide these veins.

  1. You are getting old.

As a person starts getting older, their body skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner day by day.

  1. Your parents have veiny hands.

Sometimes the reason is not something you do or your age, but your parents who have transferred their body traits through their genes to you.

  1. The temperature is warmer.

When the temperature outside is warmer than usual, more blood comes up to the surface veins to cool your body down, making them visible. On the contrary, you may find less visible veins in cold weather.

  1. Deep Vein Thrombosis

In a DVT, the veins bulge due to a blood clot deep inside the veins. In this condition, there are chances of this clot breaking loose and reaching the lungs. It can then cause a pulmonary embolism.

  1. Vein Inflammation

Vein inflammation, also called phlebitis, occurs when there is an infection, autoimmune disorder, or injury in the veins.

  1. Superficial Thrombophlebitis

It is a condition where the surface veins swell up, usually due to a blood clot. Superficial Thrombophlebitis is often caused after the use of an IV drip or other trauma to the vein.

  1. Varicose veins

Varicose veins appear on your hands when your valves are weakened. They can become large, twisted, and painful.

As you can see, the reasons for the bulging of your veins could be harmless and normal. Most people only wish to get them checked and removed because of cosmetic reasons. If there is an underlying cause for the bulging, the treatment is most likely cost-effective and straightforward.
