The food safety and standards authority of India (FSSAI) ensures the safety and quality of food being provided by any food business. They have a network across the country to spread correct information about food safety and hygiene read.

What is FSSAI License?
FSSAI is vested with the responsibilities of ensuring that every food product is undergoing proper quality check in a restaurant or not. FSSAI licensing would help to end the practice of food adulteration and the sales of inconsumable products. FSSAI mainly deals in registering and licensing any food-related business and has specific rules and regulations for conducting a food business anywhere in India.
FSSAI registration/license is a 14-digit number that could be labeled on the food packets, restaurant menus, websites, etc. these licenses differ based on the scale and turnover of the business. Major categorization of the FSSAI license/registration is:
- FSSAI Basic registration: this is for small businesses that have a turnover of less than Rs 12lakh annually.
- FSSAI State license: when the business turnover is more than Rs 12 Lakh but lesser than Rs 20 crore yearly
- FSSAI central license: when the business has a turnover of more than Rs 20 crore yearly or wants food import or food export license India.
Document requirement for restaurants to obtain FSSAI registration
The lists of following documents are essential for a restaurant/ home chef to apply for an FSSAI registration:
- Passport size photograph
- Declaration form
- ID proof, i.e., voter ID, aadhar, passport
- Papers of possession of the business premises
The process to obtain an FSSAI license
- Visit the official website of FSSAI and check the eligibility criteria or in which category of license or registration your business exists.
- Fill up the signup form for the required category and activate the account.
- Sign in to the account and start filling the application form. Make sure before filling the form you have all the required documents with you.
- Apply. In addition, you will get the application reference number to track the status of your application.
After receiving the application, the governing body will examine and would carry forward their inspection. If the inspector gets satisfied, he shows the green stick. Everything will take up to 60 working days.
Penalty for any compliance
All the food businesses registered under FSSAI need to follow specific rules and regulations mentioned in the food safety and standard Act of 2006. During the inspection, the food safety officer will identify the business’s compliance against the rules and regulations of the Act using the checklist. They mark the food business as:
- Compliance
- Non-compliance
- Not-applicable
- Partial compliance
FSO will issue an improvement notice depending upon the grade the food business has achieved.
